Knowledge: What are the three main Maori words that are used in the story and what do these mean? (Write in your own words.

The three words are marae, hangi, and  powhiri.

 MARAE The marae (meeting grounds) is the focal point of Māori communities throughout New Zealand. A marae is a fenced-in complex of carved buildings and grounds that belongs to a particular iwi (tribe), hapū (sub tribe) or whānau (family).

HANGI A pit in which food is cooked on heated stones.

POWHIRI The pōwhiri (or pōhiri) is the welcoming ceremony on a marae. Marae are not the only places where pōwhiri take place. Pōwhiri can happen anywhere that hosts (tangata whenua) wish to formally welcome a group of visitors (manuhiri).

Comprehension Describe how you think learning and life at school is for Zoe. Summarise your ideas into a paragraph using at least 6 sentences.

I think learning at school for Zoe is a bit hard and a bit easy because when you are first learning sign language it can be a bit hard. When you get used to  it you can speak to Zoe using sign language.

Zoe was born completely deaf. When she goes to her school there is a special lady called an interpreter. Her name is Angela. She helps Zoe with her spelling, reading and writing.

Application What questions would you ask Zoe if you got to interview her? Come up with at least 5 questions.

1. How do you do the alphabet?
2. How do you spell Hayley in sign language?
3. How do you say forest?
4. How did you learn sign language?
5. How do you say happy?

Synthesis- New Ideas Learn a phrase in sign language and teach it to someone else, ask Mrs Boswell to film you signing.
